we also checked out a retrospective exhibition of famous peruvian singer yma sumac.

we had a great chat with andres...a peruvian tour guide (amongst other things). we helped him with a bit of english, he in turn helped us with spanish.
THE dish to have when near the coast in peru...cerviche. raw fish in lime juice with onions, seaweed, and sweet potato. yum.

a little ways outside trujillo we visited huacas del sol y de la luna (temples of the sun and moon). built around 600 AD by the moches peoples.
a pervian hairless dog with pre-inca origins. its got a higher than normal body temperature therefore was used as body warmers for people with arthritis.
one of the millions of adobe bricks used in the construction of the moon temple. this one marked with a symbol representing the worker who made it.
damage to the temple due to severe weather brought on by el nino meant successive generations would build on top of the previous structure, totally covering it, and also preserving it.

chan chan...the biggest pre-columbian city in the americas, and the biggest adobe city in the world. not much left now, again due to flooding and heavy rain brought by el nino.
the coastal town of huanchaco. local fisherman still use the same style reed boats as the moche people used 2000 years ago.
the boats have a life expectancy of two months before becoming water logged...then new ones are built.
the town of huaraz...nestled between the mountain ranges of the cordillera blanca and the cordillera negra.

here in the village of cashapampa, we start our trek into the amazing quebrada (valley) santa cruz in the cordillera blanca. it might just be the most stunning collection of mountains we've seen.
day two...walking alongside the emerald lake of laguna jatuncocha with nevado taulliraju (5025m) in the background.
trekking at altitude with all our gear (tent/food etc.) was tough going at times.
a perfect spot to set up camp in this meadow beneath the peaks of nevado quitaraju (6036m) and nevado abasraju (5785m).
day three...we continue upwards, now virtually beneath the stunning peak of nevado taulliraju which we only saw from a distance on day one.
