india - the south

in need of some well deserved beach time, we take the train straight to goa.
goin' fishin' on the river chapora.

just outside our beach hut accommodation, near arambol.

fresh from 30ft up the tree, a coconut for breakfast.

cows also enjoy relaxing 'down the beach.
fisherman at dusk.
one of the many chapels along the beach.

the famous wednesday market in anjuna.

reunited with the lovely ellie and harry! our tibet travel mates...
...and enjoying a great night out in anjuna.

church of our lady of the immaculate conception in the centre of panaji.

taking in the portuguese colonial atmosphere of panaji.

antique teapots and tea chests decorate 'teapot', our favourite cafe for afternoon chai.
strolling around the streets of fort cochin.

watching carnatic music and dance, part of the kalyana krishna festival 2008 in ernakulam.

colourful, reversable puppets (just flip it upside down). another photo for oma.
just about to leave for a relaxing cruise in the 'backwaters' outside alleppey, kerala.

putting along the many canals lined with palm trees and rice patties (which are about 1m below sea level) . our one bedroom boat or 'kettuvallam' is like a very large canoe, with a wood hull and thatched roof.

watching the daily backwater life.

locals live on narrow spits of reclaimed land and mostly get around by boat.

all the while we enjoy local cuisine which is cooked onboard. nice.
lovely varkala beach, enclosed by red cliffs, with great seafood to be had in the restaurants perched up top.
sari swim.

always interesting, rail travel in sleeper class.

reunited with our friend ananth (whom we met in china) and his family. they were our gracious hosts while we stayed in chennai - many thanks to the krishnan family!
ancient rock carvings beneath the mahishamardini mandapam & olakkannesvara temple.

the shore temple - mamallapuram.

along the seafront promenade of the former french colony, pondicherry.

We also visited auroville which is just outside pondicherry. started in the 60's, auroville is to be an 'ideal township devoted to an experiment in human unity'. Its population of about 2000, made up of people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds (representing humanity as a whole) from 35 nations. hmmmm...interesting (and weird).

a bit of france in india, one of many rues in pondicherry.

sorry, with slow broadband speeds in india (248 kbps), uploading photos is time consuming...so updates will be slow!
